Companion training

How we train every companion

Every companion completes mandatory training before they are activated on Connectea. This page explains why, and what it covers. It is not the training itself — it is an overview, so you can understand how seriously we take this before a companion ever visits your family.

Why we train

Trust is not assumed at Connectea — it is built, step by step, before a companion ever meets a family. Training is one part of a wider process that also includes an Enhanced DBS check, an interview, and reference checks. No companion is activated until all of this is complete.

We believe training matters because companionship, done well, requires real judgement — knowing what to do if something feels wrong, knowing the boundaries of the role, and knowing how to act in the first, most important moment: the first visit.

What we teach

Every companion completes four modules before they can be activated:

Safeguarding

How to recognise signs that someone may be at risk of harm, neglect, or abuse — and exactly what to do if they notice something. Companions are trained to report, not investigate.

Scope of role

A clear line between companionship and care. Companions are trained on precisely what they do and do not do, and why that line exists.

The Three-Way Introduction

Why a trusted third person must always be present for a first visit, with no exceptions, and what a companion does if that condition isn't met.

Reporting a concern

How to raise a concern, at any time, about anything — and the reassurance that doing so never reflects badly on them.

How we check it's understood

Each module ends with a short comprehension check. A companion must answer every question correctly before moving to the next module. There is no time limit, but there is no shortcut — training cannot be skipped, and it cannot be passed without genuinely understanding the material.

Training is one part of a larger process

Training sits alongside our Safeguarding Policy and Companion Code of Conduct, which every companion also reads and agrees to. Together, these set the standard every companion is held to, for as long as they work with Connectea.
